Cooking Tour with my grandmother

Updated: Apr 5, 2020

In this blog I will invite you to have a cooking tour of Bilisht, Korça. You will see how locals live and eat. You will cook with my sweet grandmother and enjoy her delicious foods.

Growing up with a sweet grandmother and a great cook, made me develop a strong passion for cooking. I remember the days when I was a little girl and seeing my mother cooking my favorite meals in the kitchen, were the greatest moments in my life.

My mother has always been a great cook. I used to spend a lot of endless days and nights watching my mother and grandmother making biscuits; using colorful, biscuits' shapes, making homemade pasta sauce with fresh tomatoes and herbs from their garden, delicious cakes with fresh, icy and peach cream. Oh! Those were the days.

The Trip to Bilisht

Last week I went for a visit at my grandmother's house in Bilisht. Bilisht is a small province near the city of Korça.

Bilisht is well known for its biological products. In Bilisht is a pleasure to do the groceries. You can buy fresh fish, vegetables and fruits for a cheap price and the quality is very good.

Each product is safe and delicious. The province in itself is quiet and locals are very friendly. In each corner of this small province you will see farmers selling biological products (Tomatoes, onions, honey, herbs, fish and green leaves vegetables).

I always love visiting my grandmother's house. It's always neat, fresh, has a traditional look and smells good.

She knows my weakness for biscuits. She has a small, nice decorated table covered with vivid and fresh flowers. I always sit down there and wait for my lovely grandmother to surprise me with my favorite biscuits and a nice hot cup, of blueberry tea. We discuss for a couple of times and then comes the best part. Lunch! I love cooking with my grandmother.

Cooking Tour in Bilisht, Korça.

You will start the cooking tour in Korça. You will visit the city of Korça with our great guide Genci, who will take care of you, and you will visit some of the most important sites.

In the afternoon you will depart to Bilisht province which is 1 hour away from the city. My grandmother will host you at her house. There you experience how a local eat and lives.

The buildings' style, the traditional neighborhoods, the small markets, the Pedonale and nice cafés. You will have the most beautiful experience. At the end of the tour you will be given two recipes as a souvenir and photos taken during your cooking class and little activities around the cities we will wonder together!

I will show you some of the main local's foods of Bilisht region that my grandmother will demonstrate for you:

Petulla

When I was little, chubby girl and flue could hit me, I thought that grandmother's Petulla would make me feel better. And it was true.

First thing my grandmother asks me to do when I start cooking is to wear an Apron. All old women in this province wear cute aprons when cooking.

Cooking petulla is not a big deal. Petulla are small, fried dough made with warm water, a spoon of salt, yeast and bread flour. It is sticky and yummy. You can serve it with white cheese and cherry jam for a different taste. You will love my grandmother's Petulla.

Homemade Plum Juice

In Bilisht locals consume organic drinks and foods.

Mostly they prefer to cook at their home because they are great cooks and love cooking This is the reason why I visit my grandmother's house.

She knows what to bring on the table. During Summer times, she prepares a tasty and fresh drink for us. Plum juice is my favorite drink.

She cleans out the plumps (my favorite thing to do/ you will do it too) and puts a big pot on the stove.

Fill it with water and put the plumps inside with it. Before covering the pot she fills a cup with sugar and spreads it around the plumps which now are steaming.

You will really like this drink.

Meatballs with cottage cheese and onions

Meatballs are my childhood favorite dish after Petulla. The taste is amazing and the smell of fried meatballs in the pan while being cooked, delicious. I learned how to make meatballs with cottage cheese and fresh onions when I was in the city of Pogradec with my family on vacations.

These traditional meatballs are easy to prepare. You need some fresh onions, cottage cheese, salt, pepper, one egg, herbs, baking powder and bread flour. You put on the stove, a pan and cook meatballs in hot oil. You can serve them with pasta, rice and other dishes.

Come and visit us for an outstanding experience!

Stay tuned until the next blog!
